FIRST POST FOR 2017!

KIA ORA TAMARIKI!

We are well into the last half of 2nd term and it has been pretty full on! Sad to say that we have suffered a loss of 3 members of our Kapa Haka group! But let me just take you back to the end of last year when we had our PRIZE GIVING! How was that? I was definitely on a HIGH!! We were off the HOOK! Click to see the POI E VIDEO and the TIKA TONU VIDEO.

Although we no longer have David, Lubna and Pauls in our group we need to get back on it! We have some work to do! I have big plans for Prize giving and so we need to get the ball rolling!

Here is the long awaited VIDEO of our last Kapa haka practice with them...which wasn't a practice at all...hahaha!

We need to focus on our new waiata KOTIRO MAORI E! We have learnt the first verse and we smashed it. This coming week I plan for us to learn the other 3 verses! Then we need to get into the actions! I literally cannot wait!

Here are the lyrics and meaning:

Kōtiro Māori e, taku ripene pai
O makawe hoki nga ngaru ate tai
Ko te pare huia
He tohu rangatira e
Ko Rongomaiwahine
O Nukutaurua e.
Maori lass, my gay ribbon,
your hair is like the ripples of the tide
a topknot of huia feathers
an aristocratic symbol
Rongomaiwahine
of Nukutaurua.

Rongongia tō ataahua
E te whenua katoa
Tae atu te kohimuhimu
Ki a Kahungunu e
Ko wai te wahine e
Whakakapakapa te manawanui?
Ko Rongomaiwahine
O Nukutaurua e

Your beauty is known
throughout the land
then the whisper reaches
even to Kahungunu.
Who is the woman who
breaks so many hearts?
It is Rongomaiwahine
of Nukutaurua.

Piki ake, kake ake 1
Ki Te Mahia e
Ka kite tana hiahia
Aue Ko Rongomai e.
Haere mai e tama rukuhia
Nga pāua a Tangaroa nei
Ma Rongomaiwahine
O Nukutaurua e.

He travels up the coast
to Mahia peninsula
and sees his desire.
Oh yes! Oh Rongomai!
Come young man, dive
for the paua belonging to Tangaroa
as a gift for Rongomaiwahine
of Nukutaurua.

Nāhau rā Kahungunu
Tangata whakanene
Na te pāua
I raru ana koe Rongomai e
Maranga mai e hine
Ka haere tāua e
Ki Maramatea
O Nukutaurua e.

Kahungunu has the gift,
of being a trickster.
It was the paua
that defeated you Rongomai.
Come young lady
Let us two travel
to Maramatea
of Nukutaurua.

I will have these printed and ready for next week. I will also talk with Mr B about me having Kapa Haka every morning tea, not just Tues, Thurs and Fri. So I will confirm on that.

Please be ready. Now that we have 25 mins for morning tea, lets have Karakia and eating happen in the first 5 mins then 20mins of solid practice. Thoughts? Comment below!

PS: Please give me some feedback on last nights DISCO in the comments. I will pass this on to the APT :D

WEDNESDAY 7TH DECEMBER'S PRACTICE!

Kia Ora!

Yesterday at the lunch time practice, I proposed some options regarding our POI E item. I had suggested that we vote to either just stand and sing POI E without doing the poi actions, or to go ahead and do the poi actions, which was the whole idea of the song in the first place.

3 hands went up to just sing, and the rest had voted to carry on and do the poi actions.

At the after school practice, I spoke with those who weren't at the lunch practice...and the plan is to go ahead and do the poi actions! SO there we have it...WE ARE DOING IT. Those that lose their way with the poi will just have to pick up where they can during the song. Remember to smile and enjoy what you are doing. We want to show case what we have learnt and show that we enjoy it too!

Here are some video's of yesterday's after school practice. Check them out...

Don't forget... PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!

We have lunch time practice Thursday (today), Friday (tomorrow) and our FINAL after school practice on Friday from 3-6pm!!!!!! We perform on Monday the 12th at about 12:30 noon.

WE! CAN! DOOOOO! THISSSSSSS!!!!

THANK YOU LUNCH CONCERT 12TH DEC 2016

KIA ORA TAMARIKI!!

So it's been a while since I have dropped an entry, life has been busy and we have been working so hard at school, not to mention in Kapa Haka!!

So here is some homework:

GIRLS!
We need to smash the POI! I have made most of the poi and we have had a run through today (Tuesday 29th Nov) at school.

Here are the vid's for the first verses of Poi E:

- FIRST VERSE

- SECOND VERSE

GIRLS PLEASE, this is your HOMEWORK this week. By Friday we should be able to perform both verses smoothly. We will add the chorus on Mondays practice.

PLEASE while you are learning the poi, sing along and learn the words. The boys are left singing the chorus by themselves.

PLEASE BRING YOUR POIS AND LYRICS TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY!!

Any questions you can find me on instagram, fb messenger or text me on 0211646606.

Kia pai to ra,

Friday 30/09/16

Ata marie!

We has an awesome practise last Friday. We went through singing Poi E a few times and the boys are about done with the Kapa o Pango haka. The boys learnt the Ka Nukunuku chant as the girls were working on the boy.

We were blessed to have a couple old boys helping our on Friday and have had one of the 2 old boys are every practise. Great school spirit!

We will be having a shared lunch on Friday this week for our last practise over the school holidays. A few students suggested that, so parents, please let me know if that works for you.

Kia pai to ra.

Wednesday 28/09/16

Kia Ora kautou!

Today we actually got through POI E! Below is a recording of our success thus far. There were only a few of us at practice, but it would sound better with everyone else.

Link of our recording HERE.

The boys are getting through the KAPA O PANGO haka and we are looking forward to moving on to the next Haka.

FOR HOMEWORK

BOYS: Please learn the words to Kapa of Pango and if possible the actions. The most important thing is learning the words and pronunciation, the actions will follow.

GIRLS & BOYS: Please learn all the Poi e lyrics. Again - learning the words and pronunciation is very important.

I look forward to seeing you all on Friday 9:50am - 1pm.

Kia pai to ra (have a good day)
